Commissioner Jessica Smith was elected in November 2014 to represent Single Member District 1B07, a small but dense single member district north of Meridian Hill Park between 14th and 16th Street NW. During her first term, Commissioner Smith has worked to build more community awareness around what the Advisory Neighborhood Commission does and involve more residents in their local government. She has also worked to make her single member district a safer place by engaging in community dialog around crime prevention, spreading awareness about crimes of opportunity, and getting more police coverage near Girard Street Park where many children and families gather on a daily basis.
In February, 2016 she was nominated as Chair of the Public Safety and Community Engagement Committee for ANC 1B, where she continues to engage the community around safety strategies to make Columbia Heights, U Street, LeDroit Park, Georgia Ave., and the 14th St. Corridor a more cohesive and safer places for residents and visitors.
Commissioner Smith has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan where she studied social policy and evaluation within communities and social systems. She currently manages a local family preservation program that provides families experiencing crisis the support they need to stabilize their situation and keep their children out of foster care. Commissioner Smith is very passionate about community organizing and feels privileged to represent the residents of ANC 1B.
