Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1B serves the communities of Columbia Heights, LeDroit Park, Pleasant Plains, Shaw, U Street, University Heights, and lower Georgia Avenue. The ANC considers a wide range of policies and programs affecting our neighborhoods, including traffic, parking, recreation, street improvements, liquor licenses, zoning, economic development, police protection, sanitation and trash collection, and the District’s annual budget.
The ANC is made up of elected residents of the neighborhood, who collectively form a Commission. Decisions of the Commission are given great weight by District agencies and the City Council. In each of the areas listed above, the purpose of the ANC is to ensure that input from residents of the affected neighborhoods is heard at the highest levels of local government. For that reason, the ANC is the body of government with the closest official ties to the people in our neighborhoods.
ANC-1B presents its positions and recommendations on these and other issues to various District government agencies, the Executive Branch, and the Council. It also presents testimony to independent agencies, boards, and commissions, so that local voices may be heard at every level. To get in touch with the ANC, contact us here:
