LARRY HANDERHAN

I am a career public servant with over 15 years of experience working to support vulnerable communities. I ran for ANC to help the city work for my neighbors and promote equity and livability for all ANC 1B01 residents.

Since 2012, I have served as the Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF), where I support day-to-day operations for the federal government’s largest human services agency focused on children, youth, and families. Previously, I spent four years as the Chief of Staff for the D.C. Department of Human Services, a 1,100-person agency responsible for homeless services, public benefits administration, and other anti-poverty programs. Before that, I worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under President Obama. I also completed an AmeriCorps service year based in Anacostia, in which I spent most of the year deployed to the post-Katrina Gulf Coast. I have a BA in American History and an MPA in Public Policy.

I first fell in love with DC while working here for a summer in college. When I was looking for a neighborhood to permanently settle in, I wanted a community with engaged residents, historic character, and access to amenities and public space. I found my dream home on the 500 block of U Street. I previously served on the Board of the LeDroit Park Civic Association.

In my spare time, I enjoy fixing up my 1880s twin rowhouse, supporting political campaigns and causes, and dining outside at DC’s streeteries.
