The Public Safety Committee (PS) reviews and monitors rules and regulations pertaining to police and fire regulations, police protection, fire prevention, emergency medical services, homeland security, criminal justice, human rights, and public safety.

2025 Committee Highlights

  • Elevated focus on youth engagement and violence prevention through partnerships with violence interrupters, recreation centers, and youth-serving organizations.

  • Strengthened coordination with MPD, federal partners, and Howard University Public Safety on curfew enforcement, camera use, patrol coverage, and community safety strategies.

  • Monitored crime trends, including shootings, robberies, narcotics activity, crowd management, and juvenile safety, particularly along U Street and surrounding corridors.

  • Supported development of resolutions on violence interruption, U.S. Attorney transparency, youth programming, and unified accountability in public safety initiatives.

  • Raised community concerns around federal law enforcement actions, racial profiling, and the impacts of the federal MPD takeover.

  • Explored opportunities to activate parks and recreation spaces for youth programming, Late Night Hype events, and community partnerships.

  • Promoted initiatives like Camera Connect, Safe Passage, public safety walks, and collaboration with service providers to improve neighborhood safety and access to resources.
