The National Park Service has given public notice that its work in Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park this summer will now include “the effective restoration of the large grass panels in the upper level of the park.”

That means a new lawn — hopefully using a species of grass that’s much more resilient to the heavy use of a lawn in an urban park.

This work will require NPS to close both lawn panels on the upper plaza, beginning Monday, March 23. The formal notice of closure lists an end date of September 4, but surely that will change based on how quickly the work progresses.
